UPDATE: PM orders Russian governors to control wage arrears payments

(Adds details in last paragraph)

MOSCOW, Nov 25 (PRIME) -- Russian governors must control payment of wage arrears, which amount to about 4 billion rubles, personally, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a government meeting on Friday.

“We understand it, this issue, since it is so much talked about, must be under personal control of regional heads. And anyway the existing debts have to be paid,” Medvedev said.

He said that the government earlier subsidized regions so they could raise salaries of state workers but the measures were not enough.

Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets told reporters that the government should develop proposals to eliminate wage arrears until the end of 2016, and it will take about two years to redeem all the arrears.
